The Case of the Missing Surveillance Footage
Published {$created} by Viggo
We recently experienced an outage impacting a subset of our customers utilizing ftpGrid for camera surveillance footage storage. The root cause, surprisingly, wasn't a server issue or network problem; it was a misconfiguration stemming from a lack of explicit requirements around “secure enterprise file transfer europe.”
Initially, a customer was attempting to transfer large video files from a network of Axis cameras across multiple European locations. The transfer failed repeatedly, leaving them without critical surveillance data. Debugging revealed the customer was using standard FTP (not FTPS or SFTP). While our infrastructure supported FTP, it lacked specific hardening and geographical routing optimized for regulatory compliance and performance within the European Union. The default configuration, while functional, wasn’s tuned for the unique needs of "secure enterprise file transfer europe." The customer’s setup, using a standard FTP client, also contributed to the problem through lack of encryption.
The Fix: Regionalized Configuration and Strict Protocols
The solution was twofold: first, we implemented a regionalized configuration profile tailored for EU-based customers. This profile mandates the use of SFTP, strengthens authentication requirements and incorporates geographically optimized routing for improved latency. Second, we enforced a policy requiring all new accounts created for file transfers to European locations to utilize SFTP. We also updated our onboarding documentation to emphasize the importance of secure protocols and provide clear instructions for configuring SFTP clients. Details on authentication, including SSH key generation and usage, can be found at https://ftpgrid.com/tutorials/create-ssh-keys-for-sftp-scp-authentication/.
We also updated our terms of service to reflect this requirement, reinforcing our commitment to data security and regulatory compliance. Customers are now guided towards https://ftpgrid.com/tutorials/ftp-101-sftp-connection-lftp-winscp/ for proper setup.
Lessons Learned & Future Prevention
This incident highlighted the importance of anticipating specific regional requirements, even when our core infrastructure is broadly capable. Moving forward, we’ll incorporate regional configuration profiles into our default setup and proactively communicate security best practices for "secure enterprise file transfer europe" during onboarding. It also reinforces the importance of avoiding plain FTP, as detailed in https://ftpgrid.com/tutorials/ftp-101-why-many-are-moving-from-plain-ftp/.
