If you’re using an Axis IP camera, setting up cloud backup is easier than you might think. Whether you want off-site video storage for security, compliance, or peace of mind, using FTP or SFTP is a simple and reliable solution.

In this quick tutorial, we’ll show you how to connect your Axis camera directly to ftpGrid, a secure cloud storage service designed for video surveillance backups.

Why Back Up Axis Cameras to the Cloud?

Local storage (like SD cards or NAS) can fail, get full, or be stolen. A cloud backup ensures your recordings stay safe even if the camera or network goes down.

With ftpGrid, you get:

  • Encrypted transfers (FTP, FTPS, or SFTP)

  • Affordable, scalable storage

  • No software installation — the camera uploads directly

  • Access from anywhere

Learn more about the platform on the FTP Cloud Storage overview.

Step-by-Step: Connect Axis Camera to ftpGrid Cloud Storage

1. Log in to Your Axis Camera

Open your Axis device in a browser and log in with admin credentials.

2. Go to the FTP Upload Settings

Navigate to:

Setup → System → Events → Recipients → Add → FTP

3. Enter Your ftpGrid Credentials

Use the credentials from your ftpGrid account:

  • Server: ftp.ftpgrid.com

  • Protocol: Choose SFTP or FTPS for encryption

  • Username / Password: From your ftpGrid dashboard

  • Remote Directory: /camera_backups/ (or any folder you prefer)

You can find detailed setup instructions in the Quick Start guide.

4. Test the Connection

Click Test to verify that your Axis camera can reach the ftpGrid server.

If the test passes, your camera is ready to start uploading automatically.

5. Configure the Event Rules

Create an event that uploads footage:

Setup → Events → Add Rule

Choose triggers such as:

  • Motion detection

  • Time schedule

  • Continuous upload

This tells the camera when to send recordings to the cloud.
