Hosted FTP Storage for Infrastructure Automation

Published {$created} by Carsten Blum

Many operational workflows – from automated build processes to remote configuration management – rely on consistent, accessible file storage. While object storage solutions like AWS S3 or Azure Blob Storage are popular, they aren't always the best fit for every scenario. Older automation tools, or situations demanding simpler interaction, can benefit significantly from a reliable, hosted ftp storage solution. We're seeing increasing demand for this use case, and demonstrating how we use ftpGrid to support it.

The Problem: Legacy Tools and API Overhead

Consider a scenario involving automated infrastructure provisioning. A configuration management system, built years ago, relies on transferring scripts and manifests to remote servers via FTP or SFTP. Replacing this system to use a more modern API-driven approach can be a massive undertaking – a re-architecture that might not be justified by the gains. Similarly, scripts orchestrating deployments might be deeply embedded in existing workflows and difficult to refactor. Object storage APIs introduce overhead – additional dependencies, authentication complexities, and a steeper learning curve for maintenance staff.

In these cases, a straightforward, accessible file transfer protocol like FTP or SFTP becomes the pragmatic choice. The challenge then shifts to finding a reliable, scalable, and manageable FTP/SFTP server infrastructure. Self-hosting introduces significant operational burden. Maintaining server security, handling failover, scaling capacity, and ensuring uptime all fall on your team. This distracts from core business priorities.

ftpGrid: A Pragmatic Solution for Operational File Transfers

ftpGrid provides hosted ftp storage for infrastructure, removing the operational complexities of self-hosting. Instead of managing servers, we handle the underlying infrastructure. The straightforward approach simplifies the integration with existing tools. We support standard FTP, FTPS (explicit SSL/TLS), and SFTP (over SSH) – offering flexibility based on your security requirements. SFTP, in particular, is highly recommended for enhanced security, leveraging SSH key-based authentication (SSH-ED25519 is our preferred method).

Beyond the core protocol support, we understand operational needs. The granular control over accounts (multiple accounts, up to 500 per customer) and access privileges (RW or RO) allows for strict security policies. The ability to chroot accounts to specific directories further limits exposure. For increased reliability, we offer data replication across multiple regions and a redundant architecture with automatic failover. Monitoring bandwidth and storage usage (historical storage graphs are especially useful for capacity planning) provides valuable insight into your workflow’s resource consumption. Detailed audit logging, including IP and geolocation, aids in troubleshooting and security investigations. For integration with automated backup systems, we support external backups - syncing or mirroring data to other cloud storage solutions. Real-World Application: Automated Configuration Management

One example is automating the push of configuration files to hundreds of edge servers for a video surveillance network. The edge servers regularly pull the latest configurations from ftpGrid using a simple get command. This approach eliminates the need for complex API integrations or proprietary protocols. Similarly, DevOps teams use ftpGrid to distribute build artifacts, deployment scripts, and log files. The simplicity of SFTP commands allows for easy integration with existing automation pipelines.
