Secure Cloud FTP for Enterprise

Published {$created} by Viggo

Many enterprises struggle with the complexities and security risks of self-hosted FTP servers. Moving to a managed, secure cloud FTP solution offers significant advantages. Here's how to get started with ftpGrid.

Choosing the Right Protocol

Security is paramount. While FTP remains a baseline, SFTP (FTP over SSH) is strongly recommended. It encrypts data in transit, providing a far more secure connection. We also support FTPS (FTP with SSL/TLS) but SFTP is the generally preferred option. You can learn more about the differences here: ftp-101-ftp-vs-ftps-vs-sftp.

Account Setup and Authentication

Creating an account is straightforward. Visit pricing to select a plan that aligns with your organizational needs. For maximum security, use SSH key-based authentication instead of passwords. Generate a key pair and upload your public key to your ftpGrid account. This eliminates the risk of password compromise and significantly improves security: create-ssh-keys-for-sftp-scp-authentication.

Transferring Data

Once your account is set up, utilize a client like FileZilla or WinSCP to connect. Configure the client to use SFTP (port 10021 by default) and provide your SSH key or password. You can also leverage our API for programmatic file transfers. quick-storage-api-series-sftp-ftp.

Security Considerations

  • Disable FTP: If possible, completely disable the standard FTP protocol on your account.
  • Key-Based Authentication: Enforce SSH key-based authentication for all users.
  • Regular Audits: Review your account activity logs regularly. activity-timeline provides a detailed audit trail.
